Phil Kieran

Artist

Phil has worked with many top musicians and DJs including Peter Hook, Gary Numan, Green Velvet, Speedy J and David Holmes, and is rightly proud of being hand picked by Martin Gore to remix Depeche Mode's Sweetest Perfection. 'As I heard it he was only allowed to pick one person and he picked me, which is great'.When people meet Phil they might be surprised that underneath the good humor and easy charm lies the dedication and determination that has carried him so far but as he himself puts it 'I always took the attitude that this has to be the best I can possibly do, and you have to take that attitude or what's the point?'. Indeed.

When at home he loves spending his days in the studio, creating sounds from the things he has gathered up. Sometimes he's sampling drums off random disco and electro records from the 70's and 80's, at other times he's using different microphones to record shakers, tambourines, live drums, guitars, vocals, cello, anything that makes an interesting sound. Then he mixes them to create melodies through his synths and it's all processed on his vintage compressors and valve outboard gear, and through the big old battered 1970's mixing desk that dominates the room.

All in the pursuit of a different sound, something unique, and it's clear that Phil has achieved that: like many great producers he has a distinct something that means when you hear a track of his, no matter in what genre, you know instantly it's Phil.

Although when people think of Phil they immediately think techno, his releases have been as diverse as his influences, and Phil has also worked on film scores, most notably with David Holmes for the soundtrack of Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience.Phil has released on various labels including; Skint, Soma, Cocoon, Novamute, Electric Deluxe, Snork, and his own PKR, Phil has recorded three full length albums, firstly with his now defunked industrial punk techno outfit Alloy Mental in 2007, 2009's Sssh which came out on Sven Vath's Label Cocoon, and 2013's Le Carrousell, with his new live act Le Carrousell. Through it all there's been one aim to be the best he can, and to create the best music he can.

Nikhil Chinapa

Festival Curator, Vh1 Supersonic

To say that Nikhil Chinapa has donned many an avatar during his career, is like saying it snows in Alaska; a bit of an understatement. He morphs from DJ to VJ to MC to Music Promoter to Festival Director —some of his best known avatars — with amazing fluidity.

He studied Architecture and graduated with a Thesis in Hospital Design. A year later and for reasons that scientists are still trying to understand, Nikhil joined MTV. He said, "I think it'll be fun." For once, he was right.

At MTV, Nikhil has hosted almost every show the channel has aired. From MTV Select - MTV's longest running show, (it aired continuously for 10 years) to being the host of Splitsvilla, a judge on Roadies as well as Rock On and now host of MTV Mashups.

Nikhil's Mom still thinks he's an idiot though and should get a real job.

As a popular VJ, Nikhil got to spend a lot of time around his first love, music. In 2001, a conversation between friends resulted in the launch of Submerge — India's first, and now largest Indian Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Company in India.

By now, Nikhil had begun to DJ professionally and plays, well... whatever he feels like. His sets are moody, varied, often erratic but usually fun. Most of his sets feature frantic foot-stomping and the random flailing of arms - sometimes by him. They also feature music - the kind that has a repetitive monotonous beat and is best enjoyed at dangerous decibel levels.

Nikhil was also the co-founder of Sunburn. He is now the Festival Curator and partner of Vh1 Supersonic, Goa's brand new beach music festival.

With their debut album Snafu, signed to Universal Music India (2013) the duo made a stylistic leap forward, expanding their sonic vocabulary far beyond their previous incarnation as a minimal techno act into something unique and idiosyncratic.

Big City Harmonics

Artist

What do you think when you hear a hook you just can’t get out of your head? You begin to wonder what you’re listening to, even as the music builds up into a frenzy, and you grow even more curious. Enter Big City Harmonics – the solo project of Rohan Hastak – a former guitarist turned live electronica act.

A synergy of sampled elements and original compositions, Big City Harmonics has a grand design that includes hidden sounds and sweeping melodies. The converted bass player and co-songwriter was a part of a three-piece alt rock band called Kuru (now Poacher), while studying in Canada. Influenced by the likes of Bonobo, Four Tet and Nightmares on Wax, Rohan’s practical knowledge and intuitive ear for music made it easy for him to dive right into sampling and looping. A firm grasp of the former, which is an integral part of trip hop, and his stint as a bass player gave him added advantage.

Nerm

DJ and founder of Shiva Soundsystem
